The Auryn Quartett has been playing together in the same formation since 1981, taking its poetic name from the amulet in a children’s story that bestows extraordinary powers of imagination and the capacity to realize dreams. The Auryn studied in Cologne with the Amadeus Quartet, then put the finishing touches to its own style with the Guarneri Quartet at the University of Maryland. It has appeared at top festivals, is now artistic advisor to the Schubert Festival at Georgetown University and recently established its own chamber music festival in Este, Italy. It has many CD recordings, including the complete Beethoven quartets and Schubert string quartets, which won the Diapason d’Or. All four musicians are professors on the string faculty of the Musikhochschule in Detmold, Germany. 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death, and the Auryn is playing the complete Haydn quartets in Cologne and Padova to celebrate the anniversary.
