Founded in 1974 when the original members were students at the Juilliard School, the Quartet won both the Coleman Competition and the Naumburg Award in the same year. Internationally renowned, the Quartet has appeared in major concert halls around the world and is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season with a new series of recordings on the Arabesque label, including the complete Brahms string chamber music repertoire. It holds a number of notable residencies (Aspen Music Festival and Manhattan School of Music), and as a champion of new music has given numerous premières. Violinist Peter Winograd joined the Quartet in 1990; his instrument is by Giovanni Maria del Bussetto. Laurie Carney, violin, is a founding member of the Quartet, and also performs duo recitals with her husband, cellist William Grubb. Violist Daniel Avshalomov also pursues a solo career; his viola is by Andrea Amati. Cellist Wolfram Koessel, a Mannes College of Music graduate, joined the Quartet recently.
