German tenor, student of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, winner of Leipzig J.S. Bach International competition. Vast discography of oratorios, Lieder.
CHRISTOPH GENZNov. 10, 2013
German tenor Christoph Genz was born in Erfurt and received his early musical training as a member of the St. Thomas Boys’ Choir in Leipzig, one of the choirs Bach himself led nearly three centuries ago. Genz then went on to study musicology at King’s College Cambridge, where he was also a member of the famed choir at that institution. He studied voice with Hans-Joachim Beyer in Leipzig, and with the renowned soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. In 1996 he won first prize at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig. Not surprisingly, Genz’s repertory leans heavily towards Bach, and the overwhelming majority of his fifty-plus recordings are of music by this composer. Genz’s discography, spread over nearly two dozen labels, also includes Haydn cantatas, Mozart arias and Schubert songs. From 2001 to 2005 he was a member of the Hamburg State Opera, where he sang a number of lyric tenor roles, including those by Mozart (The Magic Flute and Così fan tutte) and Strauss (Ariadne auf Naxos). In 2011 the tenor was in Montreal to sing Bach’s St. John Passion under Kent Nagano.
