Formed in 1969 at the Juilliard School of Music, the Tokyo String Quartet traces its origins to the Toho School of Music in Tokyo. Soon after its formation, it won first prize at several major competitions and is now regarded as one of the supreme chamber music ensembles of the world, giving over 100 concerts a year worldwide. With an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, it has built a comprehensive catalogue of critically acclaimed recordings, collaborating with a remarkable array of artists and composers. Its more than 40 landmark CDs include the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert and Bartók, which have won, among others, a Best Chamber Music Recording of the Year, the Diapason d’Or (2010), International Record Review’s Outstanding Recording and 7 Grammy nominations. Deeply committed to coaching young string quartets, it serves as Quartet-in-Residence at prestigious festivals, at the Yale School of Music since 1976 and at New York’s 92nd Street Y.
