American child prodigy Rachel Barton Pine began playing the violin at age 3½, and at 10 appeared with the Chicago Symphony under the baton of Erich Leinsdorf. Her principal teachers were Roland and Almita Vamos and at 17, she became the youngest and the first American gold medal winner at the J.S. Bach International Competition in Leipzig, Germany. Other major prizes followed, among others, the Montreal International Music Competition (1991), the Paganini Competition (1993), and the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition. After a 2-year recovery from a serious accident, she resumed her career with top orchestras and conductors and major festivals. Her wide ranging musical interests run the gamut from baroque to heavy metal, and her violin and piano compositions and arrangements have been published as part of the Carl Fischer Music Masters Collection, the first living composer and the first woman to be so honoured. Ms. Pine’s principal instrument is a 1742 “ex-Soldat” violin of Guarneri del Gesu.
