Stephan Genz was born in Germany in 1973 and received his first musical training as a chorister of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, studying voice with Hans-Joachim Beyer at the Musikhochschule and with Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll in Karlsuhe. He attended classes in Lieder interpretation with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and came to prominence winning awards in prestigious competitions such as the Johannes Brahms Competition in Hamburg and the Hugo Wolf Competition in Stuttgart. In 1999 he was awarded both the Brahms-Preis des Landes Schleswig-Holstein and the Gramophone Award in London. He has performed in Paris, Berlin, London, Strasbourg, Milan and Monte-Carlo, as well as in North and South America. Mr. Genz is also known for his opera roles and his interpretations of the Brahms and Fauré Requiems, and Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. His Lieder recordings have earned him the Timbre de Platine, Diapason d’Or and Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, among others.
