Formed in 1969 at the Juilliard School of Music, the Tokyo String Quartet traces its origins to the Toho School of Music in Tokyo. Soon after its formation, it won first prize at several major competitions, and with an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, it was established as one of the world’s leading quartets. Performing on the ‘Paganini Quartet’, four matched Strads on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation, the Quartet is regarded as one of the supreme chamber music ensembles of the world and gives over 100 concerts a year worldwide. It has released more than 40 landmark recordings including the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert and Bartók and has earned such honours as Best Chamber Music Recording of the Year and 7 Grammy nominations. Deeply committed to coaching young string quartets, the Quartet serves as Quartet-in-residence at prestigious festivals, at the Yale School of Music since 1976 and at New York’s 92nd Street Y.
